Overview

The mission of the College of Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of the people of Texas through excellence in education, research and health care delivery.
The vision of the School is to develop the innovators and leaders in medicine and biomedical research who will transform American medicine in the 21st century.

About the College of Medicine

The Texas A&M College of Medicine was founded as part of Texas A&M University with a charter class of 32 students in 1977. The College of Medicine sought to provide well trained physicians and medical students in areas of need, including primary care and clinical care in rural communities, and to provide affordable medical school training for medical students.

College of Medicine Leadership

The College of Medicine leadership team works in conjunction with Dr. Amy Waer, Jean and Tom Endowed Dean to advise and assist on matters with mission, resources, organization, planning, and development of the College of Medicine.

Campuses

Students are offered a wide range of experiences with each regional campus and training site. The variety of clinical experiences enables each student to identify their career focus or specialty area in medicine and research. Certain campuses offer specialized programs and services.

Pre-Clerkship Courses

The focus of the medical curriculum is to prepare students for supervised medical practice through clinical integration of material throughout all four years of study. Students in the pre-clerkship portion focus on the fundamentals of biomedical science which consists of two components, Foundations and Organ Systems.

Core Clinical Clerkships & Required Courses

During the third and fourth years, students receive clinical training in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings associated with our main clinical teaching campuses.

Electives

The Texas A&M College of Medicine fourth-year electives have been developed to accommodate the diverse educational needs of our students. The electives provide students the opportunity to further develop their medical knowledge, skills and attitudes.

LCME Accreditation

Ongoing accreditation from the LCME, the national accrediting body for educational programs leading to the MD degree in the United States and Canada, is essential to our medical school and the university. Obtaining LCME accreditation ensures that medical education programs are following defined standards.

Graduate Studies

The Texas A&M College of Medicine provides cutting-edge research education and training programs through various degrees related to improve the quality of Medicine. Curriculum Models

Curriculum Models lay out the four-year plan for each class of medical students in the regular track and the EnMed track. Current curriculum models are available on the Current Student Resources page of the College of Medicine website under the Medical Education Resources heading.

Syllabus Template

The Faculty Senate approves and provides a minimum syllabus requirement (MSR) template for faculty to utilize in preparing for a course.

Medical Education Program Objectives (MEPOs)

Medical Education Program Objectives (MEPOs) are statements of the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes that medical students are expected to have achieved upon completion of the curriculum.

Preclerkship Grading

The pre-clerkship grading policies are provided in the Pre-Clerkship Student Manual for each medical student class. The current manuals can be found on the Curriculum Support page of the College of Medicine website under the Pre-Clerkship heading.

Clerkship Grading

Clerkship course grades are generally comprised of clinical evaluation scores, OSCE/Oral exam scores, NBME shelf exam scores, and other assignments and assessments from the clerkship. Grading methods are clearly published in the clerkship-specific syllabus.

Clinical Evaluation of Student

Students are evaluated in the competency domains include History Taking Skills, Physical Examination & Mental Status, Written Communication, Verbal Communication, Patient Communication, Medical Knowledge, Professionalism, and Practice Based Learning & Improvement utilizing a competency based evaluation form. Forms can be accessed through the Office of Evaluation and Assessment.

Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)

This module provides an overview of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) format and process as well as tips for writing narrative comments.

Annual Faculty Preparation for Teaching

Faculty are required to complete an Annual Faculty Preparation for Teaching module related to their pre-clerkship course(s) or clerkship.
Course or clerkship coordinators will reach out to their faculty with more information on how to complete or update the Annual Faculty Modules.

Available Online Offerings

We offer several 15-minute modules that provide an overview of teaching components in the classroom and clinical setting, working with students, mentoring, leadership, and scholarship of teaching.
