Medical degrees, programs and professional certificates
Doctor of Medicine (MD)
An innovative Doctor of Medicine curriculum was recently introduced to bring more flexibility and individualization to the education process, to create lifelong learners and bring better health care to all. The curriculum integrates basic science content more closely with clinical context, provides clinical exposure earlier and reinforces basic science content in clinical rotations.
Medical Science (PhD)
The Doctorate of Philosophy in Medical Science program provides cutting-edge research training with a flexible and interdisciplinary curriculum with six areas of research (biochemistry & structural biology, cardiovascular and lymphatic biology, cell and molecular biology, clinical and translational science, microbial pathogenesis & immunology and neurosciences) that allow students a highly personalized training program.
Medical Science (MS)
The MS in Medical Science curriculum is flexible and designed to provide a strong foundation in biological sciences along with scholarly activities that will encourage team-oriented projects, enhance interdisciplinary communication, develop leadership skills, and provide the foundation for a broad understanding of scientific, medical and regulatory issues.
Education for Healthcare Professionals (MS)
Students in the master’s program, which is designed to develop skills to become excellent teachers in their areas of specialty, may pick a 36-hour non-thesis track that requires a project, or students can complete 34 hours with a thesis. With either option, students will learn how to conduct research to improve and develop innovative educational programs in health professions education.
Education for Healthcare Professionals (CERT)
For students who wish to expand their knowledge of teaching and curriculum development, the certificate program prepares students to teach in a variety of settings with an interdisciplinary team. Coursework may be applied to the master's degree if the student wishes to pursue the advanced degree in the future.
MD/PhD
This combined training program leading to both Doctor of Medicine and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees provides research training for highly motivated medical students planning careers in academic medicine. Such training produces medical scientists with a valuable, and well-balanced, ability to relate their study of clinical medicine with basic biomedical science and provide unique insights into human disease processes.
MD + Business Administration (MD+MBA)
The MBA curriculum is designed to develop the knowledge and expertise students need to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and rapidly changing medical field. The skills acquired are easily applied in a hospital or clinical setting.
MD + Public Health (MD+MPH)
Students that complete a Master of Public Health gain knowledge on the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. The MPH’s emphasis on health at the population level adds an important dimension of insight and understanding of the dynamics of health and wellness to the practice of medicine.
MD + Master of Science (MD+MS)
The MS in Medical Science degree is available through the Clinical & Translational Science (CTS) track of the School of Medicine graduate program. The overall educational goal of this track is to prepare future physician-scientists to bridge the interface between patient care and bench research, interact effectively with the spectrum of healthcare providers and community members, and function efficiently within large research teams.
EnMed: Engineering Medicine (MD+ME)
The new Engineering Medicine (EnMed) program allows students to obtain an engineering degree along with their medical degree in an integrated four-year course of study. Graduates will be well poised to develop new therapy paradigms and pharmaceuticals and solve a variety of health care problems.
MD + Education for Healthcare Professionals (MD+EDHP)
The Master of Science in Education for Healthcare Professionals (EDHP) will provide the opportunity for individuals to develop the background and skills necessary to be excellent teachers in their areas of specialty and conduct research to improve and develop innovative educational programs in health professions education. Students who have an interest in academia are encouraged toward this program.
MD + Science and Technology Journalism (MD+STJR)
The MS in Science and Technology Journalism (STJR) provides students with skills to communicate with various audiences about medicine, science, and technology, both through the mass media and by other means. Students also explore the broader contexts of such communication in order to best serve society. Much of the learning can aid in communicating in clinical settings.
