Become a Normandy Fellow

The Texas A&M University Rudder Scholars’ mission is to facilitate appreciation for how the unique challenges posed by austere settings necessitate broad healthcare innovations that advance care of individuals injured in times of conflict and evolve to improve the lives of non-military patients in times of peace.

Our vision is developing transformational healthcare leaders with a deep understanding for how global historic crises drive radical advancements in the Art of Medicine.

As a Normandy Fellow, you will have a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of battlefield
medicine and reflect on the history as well as modern advances in military medicine and how those advances in battlefield medicine have brought about changes in the practice of civilian medicine.

This is a 6-month elective program in the history of battlefield medicine and requires a complete commitment of time and participation. Students must be in good academic standing and submit an application for acceptance.

Applications will be reviewed by program faculty and students will be notified in November if accepted.
Those accepted must attend a mandatory orientation and the elective will begin in January 2025.

This program is hosted by the Department of Humanities in Medicine.

Program Faculty: Karen Wakefield, PhD, RN; Robert O. Carpenter, MD; and Col. Jim Lucas, MD.
