Community

For long-lasting improvement of rural health outcomes, the Rural Medicine Program purposefully engages with community leaders to better serve local needs and be a partner for positive change.

The program partners with local leaders in rural Texas to understand each community’s unique culture, healthcare challenges and needs. Partner communities host our medical students during their rural rotations to craft an experiential learning experience that exposes them to life in each community both in and out of the healthcare setting. Guided by the core values of Texas A&M University, participating Aggies are exposed to what it means to make a long-term difference in society through their interactions with these key local influencers.
Community leaders play an instrumental role in the well-being and sustainability of rural areas. Through collaboration with elected officials, chambers of commerce, school district leadership and other leaders, we can collaborate and implement tactics to improve health outcomes and support medical practitioners in rural Texas.
