Family Medicine

Gabriel Neal, MD
Clerkship Director

Dr. Gabriel Neal is board certified in family medicine and received his MD from the University of Oklahoma in 2001. Dr. Neal first joined the Department of Family Medicine in 2008 as Clinical Assistant Professor, and is now also faculty in the Texas A&M Family Medicine Residency. Over the past decade he has taught in numerous pre-clinical and clinical courses for the College of Medicine. He is the Family Medicine Clerkship Director for the A&M Integrated Medicine Program at the Bryan-College Station College of Medicine Campus.

His teaching illuminates applied evidence based medical care and ethics. He was awarded Clinical Faculty Preceptor of the Year in 2011 and Outstanding Faculty in Family Medicine in 2019. He writes, lectures and interviews for lay audiences regarding popular medical topics. He authored a segment of a physiology textbook chapter on ethical considerations of illicit prescription use. He is the Director of Texas A&M Family Care (formerly Texas A&M Physicians Clinic).

Internal Medicine

Toni Keaton, MD
Clerkship Director

Dr. Toni Keaton attended medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville Tennessee. There she graduated Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She also achieved several other academic Awards. After completion, of her undergraduate medical education she finished her Internship and first two years of Residency at the Affiliated Hospitals of the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. She then married and completed her final year of Residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Affiliated Hospitals. There she stayed on another two years, as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Internal Medicine, and during that time earned a master’s in public health in Epidemiology.

 Dr. Keaton was in private practice from 1998 until 2014. During this time, she continued in her commitment to medical education, and volunteered her time as a Community Preceptor for Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas, and supervised Interns at St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston Texas. She is also committed to service. In 2009 she travelled to Lima Peru to assist in a Medical Mission, and currently participates in service activities in her community through her church, and community organizations for which she is a part.

Following her years in private practice she transitioned into Hospital Medicine, and currently is a full time Hospitalist at CHI-St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. She joined the Texas A&M School of Medicine as an Affiliate Clinical Faculty in 2016 and became clerkship director in 2019. Her clinical interests include care for under-represented and underserved communities, as well as Social Determinants of Health.  Dr. Keaton enjoys spending time with her husband and children, playing piano, swimming, and is an avid runner.

Pediatrics

Neal Spears, MD
Clerkship Director

Dr. Neal Spears joined CHI St. Joseph Health Pediatrics in early 2015. Dr. Spears attended Texas A&M University, Class of '95, and then went on to the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio for his Medical Degree. He then went on to complete pediatric residency at Texas Children’s Hospital and has worked as an outpatient clinician since 2002. 

As a pediatrician, Dr. Spears enjoys the challenge of treating children. Helping children and their families with difficult situations and diagnoses is rewarding for him. He has a particular interest in treating children with ADHD and other chronic childhood diseases including rare genetic syndromes. In his free time, Dr. Spears likes to spend time with his wife, dogs, and son. He also enjoys exercising, traveling, video games, and college sports

Psychiatry

Clerkship Director

Dr. Darlene McLaughlin joined the Texas A&M College of Medicine in 2009 in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. McLaughlin graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry. She completed both medical school and residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, as well as a rotating internship at Louisiana State University.

Surgery

 

Bryan D. Parrent, MD, FACS
Clerkship Director

Dr. Bryan David Parrent grew up in Plano, Texas, and graduated magna cum laude from Texas A&M University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in biology with a minor in chemistry. Parrent pursued his medical degree from the Texas A&M College of Medicine, graduating with honors. He completed his residency and internship training at Baylor University Medical Center, performing and perfecting his skills in general and bariatric surgery. Upon completion of his training, Parrent relocated to the Bryan-College Station area to join General and Bariatric Surgical Associates where he has built a successful and thriving practice. Parrent is a member of the American Board of Surgeons and was board certified in March 2006 in General Surgery and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 2008.

Emergency Medicine

Anthony Hackett
Clerkship Director

Dr. Anthony J Hackett is a clinical assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Texas A and M university and practices clinical emergency medicine at CHI Saint Joseph Regional Medical center.  Dr. Hackett received his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, conducting a research thesis there in concert with the University of Massachusetts Medical School developing small molecule receptors to molecularly target diabetes at the genetic level.  Following that, he then served as the chief research associate in the laboratory of nucleic acid vaccines at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where he worked for several years on HIV, Influenza and Cholera vaccine development.  He then attended medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and entered the army thereafter, completing a general surgery internship and an emergency medicine residency where he also served a year as chief resident.  Following his training, he remained in the army and was part of the residency faculty at Fort Hood’s Emergency medicine residency for four years serving as the director of research for the residency program.  He served as a board member on the Southwest Regional Command’s Institutional review board evaluating a variety of multidisciplinary research protocols for the command in conjunction with ten other members.  During this time, he founded and chaired the department of clinical investigation and the scientific review board at Fort Hood’s Medical Center.  During his time in the army he was awarded as faculty of the year as well as the Emergency Medicine Foundation’s research grant for his research on ketamine for headaches.  He has had the privilege to speak at multiple national and international conferences on his research interests which include advanced cardiac arrest therapy, pulmonary embolism, and advanced airway management.  He has published more than 20 articles and reviews in peer reviewed journals and continues to be active in research related to emergency medicine.  He is currently the clerkship director for Emergency Medicine and a member of the medical student research advisory council at the Texas A and M University medical school.  Additionally, he is the director for the US Army’s military Emergency Medicine partnership at the CHI St Joseph Regional Hospital in Bryan College station Texas. He is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the Royal College of Medicine (UK).

Obstetrics & Gynecology

Hector O. Chapa, MD
Clerkship Director

Dr. Chapa is a nationally (USA) and internationally recognized speaker and published author in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a graduate of UT Southwestern Medical School with specialty training at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is a Board Certified OB/Gyn and serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Texas A&M School of Medicine in Bryan-College Station, Texas and as Clerkship Director for OB/Gyn for Texas A&M School of Medicine. His current clinical appointment is at CHI St. Joseph regional hospital in Bryan, Texas. In 2018, Dr. Chapa became Director of interprofessional education at the School of Medicine. In 2019, he was inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society and in 2020, Dr. Chapa was voted “Educator of the Year” by the Texas A&M School of Medicine Bryan-College Station Campus.

He has published over 45 clinical articles, case reports, and medical commentaries covering both obstetrical and gynecological topics.

Dr Chapa has taught as an invited physician-faculty member in South Africa, Israel, the European Union, The Netherlands, Norway, Ireland, Chile, Columbia, and Canada due to his unique lecture style and passion for evidence-based learning.

4^th Year Director

Mark Brauer, MD
4^th year Director

Dr. Mark Brauer was Class of ’85 at Texas A&M University before receiving his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He went on to complete his residency in Anesthesiology at UTMB before relocating to Bryan/College Station to join Brazos Anesthesiology Associates, where he has been in private practice since 1992.

Dr. Brauer joined the medical faculty of Texas A&M College of Medicine in 2008 as the Clinical Director for the Department of Anesthesiology, a position he has held ever since. He became the 4th-year Curriculum Director in 2015, and was also a charter member of the Aggie Integrated Medicine Strategic Planning Committee, which helped bring the AIM program to our campus in 2014. He continues to have a passion for teaching and mentoring students at all levels.

CLINICAL EDUCATION LOCATIONS

CHI St. Joseph Health

CHI St. Joseph Health is based in Bryan, Texas, and provides the Brazos Valley with an integrated health care network of hospitals and clinics. CHI St. Joseph Regional Health Center delivers care in its modern, 310-bed hospital facility. Using the latest technology, CHI St. Joseph Regional Health Center offers complete services for emergencies, inpatient surgery, outpatient surgery and critical care cases.

CHI St. Joseph Health also has a hospital in College Station that is a 167-bed facility and a licensed Level III trauma unit. It is also an accredited Chest Pain Center, a certified Primary Stroke Center and the regions first accredited sleep center. The College Station hospital provides a full array of medical services that include cardiac, pediatrics, obstetrics, general and specialty surgery, cancer treatment, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient physical therapy, and a dialysis center.

Additionally, the CHI St. Joseph and Texas A&M Health Network will include 16 primary care locations, including pediatrics, housing 47 providers within a nine-county service area, offering access to expert specialists and ancillary services.

Baylor Scott & White Health

The Scott & White Clinics and Hospital in College Station, Texas, are part of the largest multi-specialty practice in Texas, Baylor Scott & White Health. Scott & White in College Station houses more than 100 healthcare providers and offers 25 key specialty services for adults and children, making it the largest group practice in the Brazos Valley.

Scott & White was founded in 1897 by Dr. Arthur C. Scott and Dr. Raleigh White and has become the state's largest multi-specialty group practice and a nationally recognized teaching hospital with facilities across Central Texas.

Physicians Center Hospital

The Physicians Center Hospital (TPCH), based in Bryan, Texas, is a medical and surgical hospital focusing on outpatient procedures. It is known for joint replacement and gynecologic surgery excellence. The hospital has also received numerous awards for its excellence in orthopedic, spine and gynecologic surgery.

Teri Musia
Clerkship Coordinator

Teri Musia is a Program Coordinator II for the Clinical Office in Bryan/College Station.  She currently helps coordinate the 3^rd and 4^th Year clinical curriculum in the fields of Family Medicine and OB/Gyn. Teri has been with Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Medicine since 2001 and brings a great deal of history and experience to her position.  She is originally from Hearne, Texas and received a Certification in Medical Coding.  Throughout her career with the Health Science Center, she has spent most of her time coordinating programs for 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th Year medical students.  Her mission is to assist students and faculty in an encouraging environment and to be a team player.

Dana Gerlock is a Program Coordinator for the AIM Program at Texas A&M University College of Medicine.  She loves providing guidance and support to students in their Pediatric and Psychiatry Clerkships.   

Dana strives to maximize students’ clinical learning experiences in order to ensure students have the opportunities to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully match into the Residency of their choice.

She has spent much of her career in higher education, gaining experiences in Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Family Medicine programs.

While working within the AIM Program is her primary job function by day, Dana also enjoys the outdoors, baking, and spending time with her family.

Anne Christian
Clerkship Coordinator

Anne Christian is a Program Coordinator for the Bryan-College Station campus of Texas A&M College of Medicine. She administers clinical education to 3rd and 4th year medical students and provides support to clerkship and elective directors for Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and Anesthesia.

Outside of work, Anne is a group fitness instructor and enjoys time with family, the outdoors, and travel. She is from Sugar Land, Texas and a proud member of the Texas A&M Class of 1998, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science.

Credentialing & Clinical Campus Support

 
Lurel DeBrá
Program Coordinator I

Lurel DeBrá is a Program Coordinator I in the A&M Integrated Medicine Program (AIM) at the Bryan-College Station regional campus. Lurel earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communication.

She moved to College Station 10 years ago and worked in the TAMU Office of Admissions evaluating the applications of prospective freshmen. Lurel provides administrative support for the AIM staff, clinical faculty and students. She manages affiliate credentials for two hundred plus students; tracks and maintains various student record databases; plans, coordinates, and organizes clinical campus events and is instrumental in the creation of a new clinical campus newsletter.

She enjoys working with the Clerkship team members as they serve, guide and encourage the medical students through their education journey. While she continues to love and support the Gators, she admits to being a devout Aggie fan as well. One of her favorite things about living in TX? The gorgeous sunsets!
