Women in Medicine
The purpose of the Women in Medicine organization is in accordance with the objectives of the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA), which are: to bring together women medical students and physicians; to promote their education and training; to educate them and the public on health issues of women; to encourage women to study and practice medicine; to ensure them equal opportunity to do so; to cooperate with other organizations having comparable interests; and to support medical relief services.
Women In Medicine (WIM) is working hard this year initiating new programs at the School of Medicine. In November, WIM is helping with the Healthy Heart 5K to benefit Camp for All. At the race, WIM will be holding a shoe drive, collecting gently used running shoes for the One World Running program, which then sends the shoes to needy children in Africa, Haiti, and Central America. We are also working on a project in which we would go to the local middle schools as well as the Lincoln Center in College Station to teach and encourage kids to go into the medical profession. We also hope to have local women physicians come and speak to the school throughout the year, and in the spring, we will be holding a fundraiser for a local women's shelter.
Later in the year we plan to hold a potluck dinner at a local female physician's house for female medical students to meet with female physicians in the community. Other plans include setting up a female physician-to-be monthly happy hour or social as well as other activities that support women in the medical profession and promote women's health issues.
