Family Medicine Interest Group
The Family Medicine Interest Group's (FMIG) purpose is to stimulate and maintain student interest in a career in family medicine, and to help these same individuals reach their goals within the profession. Due to the newly constructed dual campus program, FMIG is expanding to provide services to both groups.
FMIG encourages students interested in family medicine to become members of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). AAFP membership comes with the opportunity to attend the National Conference of Students and Residents in Kansas City, Missouri, each year, a subscription to American Family Physician magazine, Strolling through the Match guidelines during fourth year, member discounts, and national-level leadership positions. One-time dues of $15 are subsidized by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians. Visit AAFP Membership to become a member.
Programs
During the first two years of medical school, FMIG gears itself toward sparking an interest in family medicine among first- and second-year medical students. The interest group will host several presentations by local family medicine residents and faculty members, as well as host simulation labs in our campus simulation centers. During the third and fourth years, one of the annual events is a series called "Strolling Through the Match." These lectures are intended for fourth-year medical students during their residency program search. Faculty and staff of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Scott and White give their insight to searching for and interviewing at different residency programs. In addition, medical students are able to voice concerns and experiences to the staff and receive feedback to questions.
Health For All Aggie Clinic
FMIG also strives to promote community service among all the students, and therefore invites anyone enrolled in the College of Medicine to participate in Health for All, a community based free clinic. Medical students volunteer the first and second Thursdays of every month from 5-7 p.m. under the supervision of two licensed practitioners.
