Master of Science in Genetic Counseling

Program Announcement

Texas A&M University College of Medicine is pleased to announce the development of a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program. This program is actively pursuing accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.

Program Overview

Mission: To elevate personalized medicine and patient-centered care by educating the next generation of, and increasing access to genetic counselors, thereby improving the health and welfare of the diverse people of Texas who are affected by, or at risk for, genetic conditions.

Vision: To develop innovative, compassionate, and culturally competent leaders who will drive positive change in the ever-evolving field of genetic counseling.

Objectives: The Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program at Texas A&M University blends scientific expertise with compassionate care. Guided by a passion for “Keeping Medicine Human”, the genetic counseling program commits to preparing students for successful careers in genetic counseling by:

  • Upholding the University’s core values of excellence and respect by establishing a comprehensive, evidence-based, and esteemed curriculum that is cutting-edge and inclusive to all.
  • Upholding the University’s core values of loyalty and excellence by partnering with top-tier healthcare systems and industries for quality student fieldwork experiences.
  • Upholding the University’s core values of excellence and leadership by conducting innovative student-led research that will benefit the genetic counseling community at large.
  • Upholding the University’s core values of selfless service, loyalty, and integrity by being advocates for, and giving back to, diverse genetic counseling patient and professional communities.

Program Learning Objectives

Upon graduation from the Texas A&M University Genetic Counseling Program, graduates will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

    • Demonstrate comprehensive and current knowledge in genetics and genomics and apply evidence-based practices across diverse genetic counseling settings.
    • Integrate genetic counseling theory into practice through supervised fieldwork experiences in diverse healthcare settings.
    • Design, conduct, and present an original research project that contributes to the field of genetic counseling.
    • Communicate and engage effectively with diverse patient and professional communities through advocacy, service, outreach, and leadership initiatives.
    • Demonstrate ethical and collaborative practices that embody the core values of the genetic counseling profession within the healthcare system.
