CSIE Overview
CSIE stands for Clinical Synthesis and Integration Exercise.
The CSIE was originally developed by Dr. Conway at UTSA. Under the leadership of Drs. Kathleen Jones and Haley Vincent, the CSIE (with some revisions) were adopted by the COM in 2014 and implemented in 3 Foundation and 7 Organ System Blocks:- Neuroscience
- Introduction to Disease
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Respiratory
- Hematology/Oncology
- Renal/Genitourinary
- Gastrointestinal/Metabolism
- Endocrine/Reproductive
- Integument/Musculoskeletal
With the implementation of the 18-month curriculum, the CSIEs were redesigned in 2016 by Dr. Rania Cannaday and Dr. Jeremy Gibson to meet the demands of the new curriculum. With the continued help of content and case experts, the CSIEs are currently delivered on four regional campuses in Semester 3, ensuring coverage of the objectives and implementation in a similar fashion, and allowing students to learn in an active and collaborative way.
CSIE Components:
ACE (A Clinical Approach Exercise): ICE (In-Depth Case Exercise): Early in the Organ System Blocks, the ACE provides the students with an overall clinical approach to common chief complaints and diseases within a given organ system. It provides the 'big picture and a framework on which they can build upon. Later in the block, students can utilize the ICE to built on the clinical framework introduced earlier in the block. The ICE integrates block content in a clinical case format. The ICE format is also used in the 3 Foundation courses. Faculty facilitators on the different regional campuses can access the CSIE courseware and learning materials allowing them to provide face-to-face interactive learning workshops on their respective campuses.
