PROGRAM OPTIONS

Option A: Before entry into TAMU
(Incoming Freshman Texas A&M Student)

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The program will select up to 5 students per year from a pool of National Merit Scholars (semi-finalist or finalist) and/or the College Board Hispanic Scholars, African-American, Native-American and/or Rural Recognition who are seeking enrollment to Texas A&M University and a degree from the College of Science.

*For 2021, this program will NOT require the SAT and/or ACT along with the National Merit Scholars (semi-finalist or finalist) or the College Board National Hispanic Scholars, African-American, Native-American and/or Rural Recognition.

• The application will open December 1 of any given year
• The application period will close on February 1 of any given year
• Screen only those applicants who have expressed interest in medicine as a career; are U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents (preference will be given to Texas residents) and have achieved
  • A minimum cumulative High School Overall GPA of 3.50. (unweighted)
  • Rank in the top 10% of graduating class (recommended)
  • Score a minimum 1300 SAT (Verbal/Math) or 30 ACT
• The second round of reviews will require interviews of the candidates meeting the above criteria and factor into deliberation the following important attributes: ability to communicate and interact, capacity for improvement, service orientation, motivation for medicine as a career, and maturity, stability and tolerance. Interviews may occur in February.
• The selection of students will be a joint process including faculty of the TAMU College of Medicine Admissions Committee and the TAMU College of Science.

OPTION B: AFTER ONE YEAR OF TAMU COLLEGE COURSEWORK (CURRENT TEXAS A&M STUDENT)

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The program will select 5 students per year from a pool of College of Arts & Sciences degree-seeking students after their first year at Texas A&M University.

• The application period will open on October 1 and closes on December 1 of each year.
• Screen only those applicants who have expressed interest in medicine as a career; are U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents (preference will be given to Texas residents), and have achieved
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 at the end of the first year of attendance at TAMU (or at least 24 credit hours).
• Complete Biology I and II and Chemistry I and II with lab with a B or better.
• The second round of reviews will require interviews of the candidates meeting the above criteria and will factor into deliberation the following important attributes: ability to communicate and interact, capacity for improvement, service orientation, motivation for medicine as a career, and maturity, stability and tolerance. Interviews may occur in November.
• The selection of students will be a joint process including faculty of the TAMU School of Medicine Admissions Committee and the TAMU College of Arts & Sciences.
• Transfer students are ineligible.

How to Apply

Must meet overall GPA of 3.5 or better
To qualify for the application process students must have expressed interest in medicine as a career, be a U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Resident (preference will be give to TX residents). (Please refer to program options for incoming freshman or college student)

The Application

• Important: The application must be filed online through the School of Medicine's Admissions Processing Portal (APP), the Texas A&M University Health Science Center's form processing software.

Letters of Recommendation

• Two individual letters of recommendation are required. One of those letters has to be from a science professor/teacher.
• Letters must be on official letterhead and addressed to Mr. Fernando Vasquez and uploaded to the application portal by the letter writer.

Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts are required to make the application complete. These can be uploaded to the application portal by the applicant.

APPLICATION & SELECTION TIMELINE

After applications have been evaluated, the selection committee will choose a selected number of applicants to forward in the process and conduct interviews. From this pool, the final applicants will be chosen. The selection is based on a joint process of the School of Medicine and the College of Arts & Science. Students are chosen for their intellectual capacity, motivation for medicine as a career, service orientation and ethical responsibility to self and others.

• By April 1: Acceptance/Alternate/Denial notifications sent

Option B: Current Second Year Texas A&M Students

• October 1: Application opens (8 a.m.)
• December 1: Application closes (5 p.m. & all supporting documents due)
• December 9-15: Applications screened
• December 19: Interview Invitations sent
• January 30-February 1: Virtual Interviews will be held at the College of Medicine
• February 10: Admissions Committee deliberations
• By March 3: Acceptance/Alternate/Denial notifications sent

REQUIREMENTS

By the time of enrollment in medical school, S2M students must fulfill the following:

• Satisfy the College of Medicine's undergraduate course requirements:
  • B grade or higher
  • 47 semester hours
• Earn a cumulative 3.5 OGPA and 3.5 BCPM GPA (biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics)
• Score a minimum of an 80%tile of MCAT score with no less than a 67%tile in each subsection.
  • One retake of the MCAT is allowed if the minimum scores are not achieved on the first attempt
• Complete a non-credit seminar course specifically designed to uncover:
  • the intricacies of the medical school application and interview processes
  • medical school curriculum
  • issues that describe medicine as a practice and a career
• Participate in advising activities:
  • advising sessions with the College of Medicine's Admissions Office
  • seek summer research or pre-medical internship program during junior or senior year
• Research through the 12-week College of Medicine Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
• Gain clinical experience:
  • shadowing, volunteering or employment in a hospital or private clinical practice
  • at least 5 hours per month for three years OR minimum of 60 hours per year
• Perform community service:
  • participate in non-healthcare community service
  • at least 5 hours per month for three years OR minimum average of 60 hours per year
• Complete the degree plan as prescribed and within the standard acceptable time frame
• Upon acceptance into the S2M program, complete all coursework toward degree at Texas A&M University
• Upon acceptance into the S2M program, commit solely to the Texas A&M College of Medicine
